This volume of the Journal of Convex Analysis is dedicated to Jean-Pierre Aubin. His many outstanding contributions to non-smooth and set-valued analysis are well-known worldwide.
In particular, he was one the first to understand the potential power of the study of differential inclusions with constraints. Based on this, he built a new theory, Viability Theory, whose implications are now not only important in pure mathematics but also in control theory, neural networks, demography, economics, game theory, biology among others. Jean Pierre Aubin is also the author or co-author of approximatively 20 books, both text books and research monographs.
We hope that the present volume will testify the wide spectrum of domains investigated by Jean-Pierre.
The decision of editing this volume was taken during the conference "Set-Valued Analysis, Control, Viability and Applications" at Roscoff, France, from June 21 to 25, 2004, organized at the occasion of Jean-Pierre Aubin's 65th birthday by his former PhD students. We want to stress how much we are indebted to Jean-Pierre who was for all of us, not only a scientific and moral support during and after our PhD, but also a model of energy and open mindness in all his activities.
